How Many Tiles Are in American Mahjong?
Standard NMJL-style American Mahjong uses 152 tiles in play. A packaged set may contain 160, because manufacturers can include spare jokers and blank tiles. The number on the retail box and the number used to build the walls are not always the same. The American Mah Jongg Association's guide specifies a 152-tile set with eight jokers for standard play.
What makes up the 152 tiles?
| Tile category | Standard NMJL-style play | Current BamChive 160-tile box |
|---|---|---|
| Bams, Craks and Dots | 108 = 3 × 9 × 4 | 108 |
| Winds | 16 | 16 |
| Dragons | 12 | 12 |
| Flowers | 8 | 8 |
| Jokers | 8 | 10 |
| Spare blanks | 0 | 6 |
| Total | 152 | 160 |
These are tile counts, not instructions for building a particular hand. The winning patterns depend on the National Mah Jongg League's current card, which changes annually. To learn why the card matters, see What Is American Mahjong?.
Why does BamChive sell 160-tile sets?
Availability checked October 25, 2026: Cozy Nest travel tiles are not currently published for online purchase. The specifications below are catalog references, not an offer of availability. See BamChive’s shop for the products currently offered online.
The answer is in the published product breakdown. BamChive's Christmas Magic American Mahjong Set and Cozy Nest Cat-Themed Travel Mahjong Set each list:
The right-hand column above shows the contents listed for both products. The playing configuration and the retail inventory answer different questions.
The difference is two additional jokers plus six blanks. If your table plays the standard 152-tile, eight-joker configuration, set those eight extras aside before building the walls. The blanks should not be mistaken for White Dragons: White Dragons are a separate four-tile category already counted in the 12 dragons.
Do “160 tiles” mean a different game?
Not by itself. “160” describes what comes in these boxes; it does not tell you to play a 160-tile game. Similarly, a photo showing racks or a mat does not tell you those accessories come with the tiles. Check both the breakdown and the included-items note on the exact listing.
Another source of confusion is comparing American Mahjong with regional Chinese Mahjong variants. Those variants can use different tile inventories and rules. Our rules-and-sets comparison explains why a count without a rule set can mislead buyers.
What should I check before ordering a set?
Confirm four things: the group’s rule set, its current card, the playing tile count, and the box’s itemized contents. Cozy Nest is described as a lightweight, single-layer travel design; Christmas Magic uses layered acrylic. Both listings describe 160 tiles. Confirm carrying accessories separately; a bag or gift box is not promised by their current descriptions. Photographed racks are not included.
If you already own a set and are counting by hand, sort tiles into the six categories above. Keep extra jokers and blanks in a labeled pouch rather than mixing them into the wall. A missing tile, not a high box count, is the important problem to resolve before a game night.
Frequently asked questions
Is it 152 or 160 tiles for American Mahjong?
For standard NMJL-style play, 152 tiles are used. Some retail packages, including BamChive's current sets, contain 160 tiles because they include extras.
How many jokers are used in standard play?
Eight. BamChive lists ten jokers in its 160-tile package, so two are extra for an eight-joker setup.
Are the six BamChive blanks part of the 152 tiles?
No. In the standard configuration, the six blanks are set aside along with the two extra jokers.
Are blank tiles the same as White Dragons?
No. White Dragons belong to the 12 dragon tiles in the playing set. The six extra blanks listed by BamChive are separate spares. Use the maker’s tile key to identify custom artwork rather than assuming any unmarked-looking face is a spare.
How can I check whether a tile is missing?
Count each suit in number order, with four copies of every number; then count winds, dragons, flowers and jokers separately. A total of 160 can still hide an incorrect mix, so compare categories as well as the final sum.
